Resolutions. Cleanses. Diets. Nutrition. Whatever your reason. Join TEAM AWESOME. AKA the juice club.
This club includes:
Beets, carrots, apples, ginger, lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits, kale, celery, tomatoes, bell peppers, spinach, romaine, cabbage, parsley, cucumbers, swiss chard, grapes, pineapple, pears, melon, sweet potatoes, cranberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and whatever else you can think of that I haven’t juiced.
And it tastes delicious. And to join Team Awesome all you need is a juicer and some produce. Or a friend with a juicer and some produce. Or a cool aunt with a juicer and some produce (my first introduction to juicing). Preferably organic produce. You don’t really want to juice pesticides into your jam jar.
Which brings me to this particular juice. The ABC Juice.
ABC Juice is aptly named ABC Juice because the primary ingredients are Apples, Beets, and Carrots. The first time I juiced beets, I couldn’t drink the concoction. It was powerfully earthy and sweet. I was a bit devastated. Not wanting to waste all of those beautiful nutrients from those incredible plants, I did drink the MEH juice. But then I tried, tried, tried again.
And that’s when I learned an extremely important juice-making trick. One us professionals use. (Is there such thing as a professional juicer? Joe Cross?) What’s the trick (AKA special ingredient) you ask? LEMONS & LIMES. The tart acidity from the lemons and limes brightens up and balances out the sweetness, earthiness, greenness, or dullness of any other ingredients you might use. For me, the lemons & limes make all the difference. They turns ordinary, okay juice into WOW juice. They turn your healthy morning, afternoon, evening power drink into a party in your mouth. And it doesn’t take much. One lemon here. One lime there. MAGIC JUICE.
Let’s Talk Nutrients
Because no one juicing this much is doing it just because they love cleaning a machine every time they want one (albeit large) drink. You’re juicing beets because you love health. You love micronutrients. You love being good to your body and yourself.
So the stars of this ABC Juice show…
Apple juice (freshly squeezed) is full of polyphenols and other phytochemicals that have anti-inflammatory properties and/or act as antioxidants fighting aging and disease. + Vitamins B6, C & Minerals iron, calcium, potassium, manganese and magnesium.
Beet juice contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and C… and minerals folic acid, potassium, calcium, iron and fiber. Beets also contains antioxidants that help your body combat free radicals, cell damage and disease.
Carrots – everyone knows about the Vitamin A (gives them their deep orange hue & supports human vision), but did you know they also contain C, D, E, K, B1 & B6? Biotin, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, and potassium?
Ginger is also an anti-inflammatory and an antiemetic (anti-nausea). Lemons & Limes are full of Vitamin C, limes supposedly contain phytonutrients that protect against cholera, not to mention both will keep the scurvy at bay (WIN WIN WIN).
ABC Juice is basically human rocket fuel. Drink responsibly.
My brother bought me this very popular juicer for my birthday in October and I adore it. For a juicer, it’s relatively easy to clean. It’s fast. It’s affordable. The chute is large enough that it fits a small apple. And it can hold quite a bit of pulp before needing cleaning.
- 4 to 5 Small Apples, organic
- 5 Large Carrots, organic
- 2 Large Beets, organic
- 1 inch Ginger, organic
- 1 Lemon, organic
- Peel your lemon and your beets. Beet skin can cause a tingling/burning reaction in some people's throats. And the lemon rind can make your juice bitter.
- Chop ingredients to size to fit in the chute. Process ingredients in order.
